Project Description

Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) owns and operates two long span suspension toll bridges, the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge and the A. Murray MacKay Bridge. As a sub-consultant to Buckland & Taylor Ltd., Harbourside Engineering Consultants has provided a wide range of structural engineering and project management services to HHB.  Projects have included annual inspections of both the Macdonald and MacKay Bridges, design and engineering for repair and maintenance projects and project management of the MacKay Bridge Expansion Joint and OSDP Replacement Project.

The existing deck and stiffening truss of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge is nearing its service life and is in need of replacement. The design of the replacement deck of the suspended spans of the Macdonald Bridge is currently underway.  As part of this project, Harbourside Engineering Consultants has completed the preliminary design of the major erection equipment to be used for the re-decking project and our personnel have been intimately involved in the analysis of the existing bridge structure during erection procedures.  Presently in the detailed design phase of the project, HEC have four engineers playing an integral role on the design team working in the analysis of the existing bridge, design of the new deck and stiffening trusses and the design of erection equipment.
