Engineers Nova Scotia announced that Harbourside Engineering Consultants, Harbourside Transportation Consultants, and Harbourside Geotechnical Consultants, in collaboration with Englobe, are the recipients of the 2023 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Engineering for the Peggy’s Cove infrastructure design project. The project focused on public safety and accessibility, traffic flow management, and infrastructure improvements.
The intent of the project was to create an enhanced visitor experience by improving infrastructure within the community of Peggy’s Cove. Deliverables for this project addressed public safety and accessibility, traffic flow management, and infrastructure improvements. This included the design of a viewing platform in the lighthouse area, infrastructure improvements in the Cove, as well as public washrooms, visitor information centre and parking management. The viewing platform created a new public space that offers accessibility and improved pedestrian safety. Infrastructure improvements in the Cove, such as enlarging the breakwater,raising Peggys Point Road, creating boardwalks along the road, and constructing accessible public washrooms, benefit both community residents and visitors.
About the Award: The Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia established the Award in recognition of J. J. Kinley, P. Eng., the first and only Engineers Nova Scotia member to hold the title of Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Nova Scotia and the first and only professional engineer to hold the position of Lieutenant Governor of any Province of Canada. This award may be given annually to a team, company, government department or consortium of Professional Engineers, who through original achievement in the application of engineering principles, creative accomplishment in the application of engineering principles and excellence in engineering design, demonstrates a high quality of Professional Engineering standards.
